A friend just told me her doctor’s son died in a tragic accident. He just graduated from Harvard with a Ph.D. and was hiking in South America. He was on malaria pills as it was recommended. They made him dizzy, hence he misstepped and fell off a cliff.

Elliot and some people from church are hiking Mt. Whitney this weekend, his second time. He is again the youngest in the group. It’s certainly not a 5-star experience when you go backpacking. There are risks when you venture out. But as my brother says, being comfortable is not always the best way to live.

But then there are some things you don’t have to experience to know you don’t like it. And there are some experiences where the potential payoff is not worth the risks.

When I was young, the world was before me, I wanted to do things. Now I am older, maybe not necessarily wiser, I am content with my small world. Should I be more adventurous even though I know what I would enjoy and what I would not?
