California’s largest teacher’s union has given another $1 million to defeat a Nov. 4 ballot initiative that would ban same-sex marriage in the state.

The contribution recorded Tuesday makes the California Teachers Association the largest institutional donor to the No on 8 campaign. CTA also gave $250,000 in August to Equality for All, a coalition of gay advocacy and civil rights groups opposing Proposition 8.

Why would a teacher’s union support a proposition unless it has to do specifically with education?

Don’t get me wrong. I understand teacher’s unions are political. I am part of a real estate professional organization, and they are political. In the same way that churches need to be political too.  These organizations have a right to make their voices heard. I don’t have a problem with that. If the CTS gives to defeat homeschooling initiatives, I can understand that. I don’t agree, but I can see their point.

But supporting gay marriage???

Who controls these teacher’s unions and how is it that they got to be so liberal? I can’t imagine that a majority of teachers are liberals. I can’t imagine that teachers particularly want to advocate gay marriage in their curriculum.

If I were a teacher, I would look into alternatives such as CTEN. it looks like teachers do not have to contribute to the political fund either. I hope teachers know that they have choices, and that they are not legally bound to join California Teacher’s Union.
