While shopping online on Craigslist.com for a used car for my son, I can across this ad:

2000 HONDA Accord EX V6
LEATHER SUNROOF 200 Horse Power V6 Automatic Transmission Naples Gold Metallic Exterior Soft Plush Leather Interior In Dash CD Radio Remote Entry …Perfect CarFax History…No accidents no damage no problems…

The price? $2960!

With 116k miles, that’s at least $2000 below Kelley Blue Book! I excitedly emailed the contact and asked to make an appointment to see it.

The response was this in its entirety (emphasis mine):

Hello and sorry for my delay,

I’m Sgt. Robert Parra. This Honda is in perfect working condition. This vehicle engine runs very, very smooth. No electrical problems on this beauty. This detailed vehicle makes the exterior looks like it just came off the assembly line. The car has 118k highway miles. VIN Number: 1hgcg1655ya068349

It was never involved in any accident, not even minor ones. The body and paint are great. The interior is super clean, mechanically, it runs like a cat on carpet.

Here are the pics of the car :

As I know that my current situation is pretty special I want the deal closed only through eBay’s Buyer Protection Program in order for you to be 100% protected. You will make the payment to eBay and they will hold the money until you receive the car. ONLY AFTER you receive the car and you inspect it(for 10 days) eBay will release the payment to me; in this way we are both protected. Anyway i am sure that if you will don`t be satisfied about the car i will surely find another buyer in your area and there will be no need for you to ship the car back.

I am located in London, United Kingdom and I was sent here to improve the military relationships between USA and UK. One month ago, my wife moved here with me and brought the car with her, but now we have to sell it back in US because we can’t register it here; it has US specs and everything, and registering it here in Europe will take for ever. My final price on it is US 2,960 $. If you will take it for this price, I am willing to handle the shipping. It will be shipped from here by plane with US Air Military Cargo so it will not cost me anything. You will get it to the nearest airport in your area and then it will be trucked forward to your place. You will receive the car in about 3 days. Please get back to me asap if you decide to buy, and include in your e-mail your full name and address where you want it shipped so I can start the deal with eBay. You will receive all the transaction payment and shipping details from them.

Best Regards,
Robert Parra

Can this be legit? I am hoping it is!

I sent a message back to “Sgt. Parra” and asked him whether the car will pass the smog check for California. I figured if it was really legit, someone else probably bought it already, but it’d be worth asking.

Then a couple of hours later, I get another email. I contacted another seller of another ad from Craigslist for a Camry that I thought was a good buy.

Here is the email response in its entirely (emphasis mine):

Hello,

The 2003 Toyota Camry is located in Farmington, CT and it is in perfect condition, with no need for additional repairs, no scratches, dings, special marks whatsoever. It has 44k miles and the VIN is: 4T1BE32K03U655388. It has a clear title ready to be signed and notarized on your name. I have the pictures hosted on the net and you can see them at:
http://s215.photobucket.com/albums/cc161/RobertBright/

The price is $2,900 including shipping costs anywhere in the continental US. There are no other costs regarding this transaction.
The transaction will be closed only through a 3rd party and this way we will both be protected.

My time is limited due to my job in the army so I decided to use a service from Worldpay. To begin the transaction I’ll need your full name and shipping address. I will forward the details of our transaction to Worldpay and then you will receive an invoice from them. The car will be shipped insured to your location with DAS and you will have 5 days for inspection.

Best regards,
Robert Bright.

I am catching on now…

Both cars advertised at incredible prices at about $2,900, both seller’s names are Robert, both are willing to ship from out of the area for free, both are in the military, both use photobucket to post pictures …

Since I’ve been scouring Craigslist, Autotrader and dealerships for a car, I had sent out several emails. I forgot what I sent out.

So a couple of hours later, I got yet another response, for an Acura I asked about.

Now I am rolling on the floor laughing!

Here’s an excerpt:

Hello and sorry for my delay,

Yes, I know, you are busy in the military, right?

The 1999 Acura TL is in perfect working condition. This detailed vehicle makes the exterior look like it just came off the assembly line….It was never involved in any accident, not even minor ones…The interior is super clean, mechanically, it runs like a cat on carpet

You must’ve been talking to Sgt. Robert Parra! Both of you have a cat! And do you also have a wife who doesn’t check ahead of time if a foreign car can be registered in the UK?

As I know that my current situation is pretty special I want the deal closed only through eBay’s Buyer Protection Program…I am located in London,United Kingdom and I was sent here to improve the military relationships between USA and Serbia. One months ago, my wife moved here with me and brought the car with her, but now we have to sell it back in the United States because we can’t register it here…It will be shipped from here by plane with US Air Military Cargo so it will not cost me anything. …

It’s Serbia now, very nice.

Best Regards,
Michael Parker

At least they are getting a little more creative with the name.

I googled this subject and found a forum discussion of someone who got this email, a friend of the Roberts, no doubt, and coincidentally also named Robert, with a cat and a wife who just joined him too! I put an excerpt here, but I’m sure you can figure out what the rest says:

Date: Thu, 6 Dec 2007 18:22:47
Subject: 2001 Honda Accord

Hello and sorry for my delay,
The 2001 Honda Accord is in perfect working condition. This detailed vehicle makes the exterior look like it just came off the assembly line…blah, blah, blah…

It was never involved in any accident, not even minor ones…mechanically, it runs like a cat on carpet….

I signed up for US military forces and I was sent here with my department to improve the military relations between our country and UK….blah, blah, blah…

Sgt Robert Mclean

I might have fallen for the first reply if the scammer would just be a little for creative in their approach.

Apparently, an epidemic of ads like this is on all kinds websites, including the sale of motorcycles, ATVs, jet skis, motor homes, trailers, and even farm equipment.

One member of the forum responded with this advice:

1. eBay does not “hold the money” until you are satisfied with the car. Once you pay them, that is it. And I suspect they will ask you to pay by Western Union.

2. The military does ship cars overseas for servicemen (why does this guy talk in pidgon english if he’s American, anyway?). But thet SHIP them, by SHIP, not by air. Total LIE.

3. American servicemen can drive their cars overseas without registering them there. Again total LIE. Why would a serviceman have a car shipped overseas if he could not register it?

The pattern is the same: a coveted item (BMW, Kobota Tractor, Honda motorcycle, etc.) worth $10,000 to $20,000 is offered for a pitiful amount – $2500 to $5000 with a long-winded “backstory” behind it. You wire them the money, thinking you scored big and that’s the last you hear of them.

They hijack eBay identifications by using those phishing scams. Typically if you look at their feedback, you’ll see it is some little old lady in Arkansas selling dolls. Suddenly, the person is a Seargent in the Army in England selling a car. What gives?

If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is….

Wow, so glad i saw this!!!! thank you, so much!!!

Received return email from fred johnson on a convertible beetle, who is in london, not military anymore, now he’s an engineer in london… the twist is the car use to be mine, the vin is real and so is the car, as well as all the stats… though i did smoke in the car the year i had it

    here’s the email i received

:Hello, and thank you for being interested to purchase my 2003 Volkswagen Beetle.

The car has 39,960 miles and the price I want for this car is $ 4,000.00, the price is below KelleyBook value because I am interested in a fast sale and I need to sell this car before 15 April. The reason I am selling this car is because recently I moved to Europe (London, United Kingdom), I am working here as a construction engineer for 5 years or more. The car has clean title, clean CarFax report, never involved in any accidents, no rust or scratches and never smoked inside, the engine is working like new. The car is located in Lee, MA at a shipping company and I left all things prepared for shipping. The sale will be made through eBay Buyer Protection Program, using this method you will get 5 days time to inspect the car, 30 days time to ask for a refund and we are both protected.

If you are interested in moving forward you will have to pay a deposit $ 1,980.00 and the rest when you receive and inspect the car, this way you will be able to inspect the vehicle before committing to buy it and I know that you have the money and you are not just fooling around. I will need you full name, full address, phone number so I can open a case with eBay and they will contact you with more details via email about the purchase, payment, shipping and protection. If the car is not like described, it will be shipped back on my expense and they will give you a full refund.

If you have questions I am glad to respond.
You can view here pictures with the car ( http://www.use.com/a9e84c83a89effa965b5 ). Thank you

    – then when I asked about the transaction I got this….
    Hello,

Thank you so much for your prompt response.

Please take a few moments and read my email carefully, I know it is long, but I will explain all the details about the car and the transaction. At the moment I’m stationed at Rock Island Arsenal ,making final preparations before deploying to Afghanistan with the U.S. Convoy.

The car is already at our Military Logistic Department in Rock Island Arsenal , IL ,crated and ready to go. The Logistic Department will deliver the car to your home. The shipping is free for you. Since the car is in a military base, with no access you can not go there and take it, only the Logistic Department can deliver it, because the car is in their custody. Shipping may take anywhere between 2 to 4 business days depending on the destination. All documents you need for ownership, manuals and bill of sale will be provided along with the car .

For the payment I would like to use eBay as a third party. They will keep your money into a protection account until you get the car and will release it to me after inspection period is over and you agree to keep the car . So, this is not a blind transaction, you can see the car before committing to buy and to eliminate any concerns you will have 10 days to inspect the car . If you decide not to keep it eBay will refund you the money, no questions asked, and shipping back will be my concern. I think this is more than fair for both of us.

I’ll start the official procedure, and eBay will contact you about this. If you are interested in buying it just mail me back with:
    – Your Full Name – Required by eBay (You’ll receive important guidelines + instructions from them.)
    – Your Shipping Address and Phone Number – Required by the Logistic Department (They will call you with delivery/pickup instructions 1 day ahead so you can communicate what time schedule work best for your to receive the car)

Again I want to point out that because I am going to Afghanistan this sale is my top priority and I am looking after a fast transaction, with no delays. That is why I decided to lower the price, to avoid wasting time with negotiations and find a buyer as soon as possible.

Thanks, hope to do business with you soon!

    Hello,

I’m an 1st Lt. in the USAF, currently stationed in Lakenheath, United Kingdom for next two years.

The reason of selling it, is that i am unable to obtain a European Certificate of Conformity in United Kingdom because this Jeep meets US standards. Changing the standards to United Kingdom standards will require modifications, paper work and high costs.

This is the first time selling my Jeep online. I want you to see, drive and inspect the Jeep before you decide to buy it and for that we need a legal business-specialized company to handle the entire process for us. We will use eBay Motors Vehicle Purchase Protection (VPP).

You will make the payment to eBay and they will hold the money until you receive the Jeep. ONLY AFTER you receive the Jeep and inspect it eBay will release the payment to me; in this way we are both protected.
If you will not be satisfied with the Jeep, you can refuse the Jeep and ask for a full refund of your deposit, no questions asked. I will find another buyer in your area and there will be no need for you to send the Jeep back.
I am willing to handle the shipping. It will be shipped by plane with US Air Military Jeepgo and it will not cost me anything.
You will receive the Jeep in about 4-5 days. The Jeep will arrive at the nearest airport in your area and then it will be trucked forward to your place.

The deal WILL BE MADE UNDER THE eBay Motors RULES AND POLICIES. Both of us will be protected. I WILL NOT DEAL OUTSIDE EBAY UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES!!!

If you want to move forward, I will need your full name, shipping address and phone number. Once I will receive your details, i will open the transaction with eBay Motors, and they will send us the transaction details.

If you want to call me, this is my US phone number +1 (415) 871-0893

It is indeed a scam. I know someone who had the same thing happen to them, same generic text and all. They ended up paying $1000 for an advertised Honda Accord SE 2003 pristine pictures and all. The military lady had them mail the money via Western Union without actually seeing the real car or the lady. She even sent a carfax report. She also said no phone calls due to her being in the military.
She then tried the Ebay protection, to which we called Ebay and found that it was a scam.
Turns out the lady is nowhere to be found but the car is a real car in North Carolina.

    to me
    Hey,

I am currently stationed at Fort Irwin (U.S. Military training area in CA) making final preparations before deploying to Afghanistan. The car is here with me at the base and if we reach an agreement the shipping won’t be a problem because military has a considerable discount, so I can handle it by myself with no charges whatsoever on your account. Shipping may take anywhere between 2 to 5 business days depending on the destination. You will receive the car along with all the documents including title, bill of sale, 2 set of keys, full service records and more. I am currently signed up with Google Wallet and I would like to close the deal through them. If you are not aware of Google Wallet you should know that it will allow you to test drive and inspect the car before paying me. You will have a 5-day inspection period to decide whether you want to keep the car or not before they release the funds to me. If you decide not to keep it Google Wallet will refund you the money, no questions asked, and shipping back will be my concern. In this way you’re not buying something sight unseen. If you agree with these terms please send me your full name, phone number and the address so I can initiate the transaction with them. You will receive all the transaction details from them (terms, buyer protection coverage, payment instructions, invoice for the purchase).

I want to point out that because I am going to Afghanistan I am looking after a fast transaction, with no delays. That is why I decided to lower the price, to avoid wasting time with negotiations and find a buyer ASAP.

I got a similar scam – the scums impersonate active duty people in the military.

This one was for an actual listing in eBay that I won! Not a listing outside. I think the legitimate account holder’s account was hacked, and it was a case of identity theft.

    Warning signs:
    * The original listing was for a car for $8200 that was clearly worth a lot more.
    * They seem to have copied the listing into eBay where it was bid up to $12600.
    * The seller didn’t specify the location.
    * The Autocheck report said it was last registered in NJ, but the seller claimed that the car was in Fort Lewis army base (WA).
    * The seller claimed to be posted outside the US in the UK – a google search got me info on other similar scams – this was the first major red flag.
    * They asked me to wire transfer the money and in what seemed like an authentic mail from eBay – called eBay and they confirmed that they don’t send these mails for sure.

I had to call eBay a few times to get them to understand this was a fraud – only when I mentioned the mail asking for a wire transfer did they confirm it was a fraud. When I had called up earlier with the warning signs, they simply asked me to keep a record of my payment and that it’s covered in their payment protection plan! It seems they should’ve investigated the case right away. They have made it difficult to report things to eBay – have to call them, their website doesn’t have the appropriate categories, etc. No wonder there are so many scams. eBay better cleanup their act, or they are in serious trouble of losing a lot of business!!!

I am listing all the mails they sent. They seem very authentic. Hope this turns out useful for someone else!

This is another example from (the military) trying to scam me into buying the car – offer hard to resist. He even mentions Google shipping …. anyone can make Google look a like site, BE AWARE and STAY ALERT!

Hello my name is Christina, glad to see you are interested in my honda. The car is slightly used in 100% working conditions, has been extremely well maintained with a full service history never involved in any accidents. The title is legally under my name, clear and free of any loans.
I bought it when I was serving in CFB Meaford but I was promoted and transferred to CFB Yellowknife, Northwest Territories for a year, this being the main reason for selling it and do not want to let it ruin in my backyard for the next year.
Right now the car is located at Google Express Shipping Warehouse Nr.11. It’s already sealed and waiting to be delivered anywhere since someone agreed to buy it before but the bank didn’t approved his loan. I already paid the shipping for him as he was out of state (for this reason the shipping is included)
The financial part will be managed by Google also which means that you will have a 10 day inspection period before committing to buy the car In this way both of us are 100% covered during this transaction, no extra fees.
The final price of $10,000 includes delivery to your home address within 4-6 days, if interested Google will call to explain the entire procedure.
Here you have their webiste: http://express-shipping.google.ca.tf and if you need further info or pics please get back to me.

Hope to hear from you soon!

His second try was even better ….

    Hi again how’s everything?
If you’ll gonna decide to purchase my car take in consideration my last offer of $9000 and I will do my best to walk you through the process. The deal is handled by google so I don’t have much to do about it, within 4-6 days you will have the car delivered to your home since it’s already at the warehouse and like I said shipping and 10 days of inspection are included.
Payment wise you must charge your Google Transaction ID which will be provided by them in order to get the process started and release the payment after inspecting the car only if you want to keep it, if you decide not to, you can withdraw your funds, no questions asked. Also all documents you need for ownership, title and bill of sale, will be provided along with the vehicle.

For more info on how it works send me your name, shipping address and phone number and I’ll ask google to send you an email with more details on how to buy it.

    Yours sincerely,
    Christina

    Hi again,

Right now I’m in a military base. We are training, getting ready for Afghanistan. I am only allowed to check my email several time a day. We have to stick to e-mail for now. Hope you can understand. The truck is already at our Military Logistic Department form Fort Belvoir, U.S. Army base crated and ready to go. Like I already said, the delivery process will be managed by me. I think I can have it there at your home address within 2-3 working days. It will come with a clear title and reg. I am a member of the eBay buyer protection program and using this service you will get a 5 days testing period after delivery. During that 5 days testing period I will not be getting any money. I need to know if you are interested so I can ask eBay to send you the details on this deal. If interested please include in your next email your contact info for eBay (full name, shipping address and phone number), so we can move forward with this transaction.

Sadly, I got my hopes up over something similar:

    Hello,

I’ve received your email regarding the 2003 Honda Accord EX Coupe. The car is still for sale. It has 94,000 Original Miles, Engine 2.4L Gasoline, 5 Speed Manual Transmission, Sunroof, CD Player, Air Conditioning, Cruise Control, Power Locks, Power Windows, Power Seats etc. The car is in great condition inside and out. I’m asking $1,000 for it. The car belonged to my father who passed away this year after a long bout with cancer and brings me a lot of memories that make me suffer and this is the reason for what I want to sell it as soon as possible. I am in the Air Force and we are preparing for an important mission so I hope that I would find a serious buyer in a few days. If you have any other questions, or need more info and pics please free to ask.

    Sincerely,
    Lt. Jennifer Warner

After asking more about it, they brought up the ebay buyer protection. I thought “important mission” sounded a bit sketchy. The best part? The picture they used for their google+ profile is a picture of someone else, and it imported that information as a caption when they uploaded it! Too good to be true, alas.

  21. Brian Says:

    Hi to all,
Little inside military experience, if you know anyone close to you who serves and think you may fall for an ad like this just ask them to look over it for you. I fortunetly caught one of these scammers who didnt do enough reseach about our great country service members. He/she fowled up by claiming to be a “Petty Officer” in the USAF. Now any service member will tell you USAF doesnt go by that title, mainly USN and USCG does. so, bottom line read carefully and listen to the golden rule, if the deal seems too good to be true, its not real. These people who try to mimic services member like myself who have put blood sweat and tears overseas deserve babmboo shoots rolled uner there finger nails and water board treatment stat.

  22. Melanie Cullum Says:

Right now I’m not able to get the VIN for you since I already handed all the documents to google staff when i left the car at their warehouse but you don’t have to worry that’s why I provide a 10 day inspection period because I don’t have anything to hide about my car.

    “Scammer”

    Hello,

I’ve received your email regarding the 2005 GMC Yukon Denali. The SUV is still for sale. It has only 87,167 original miles, V8 engine GAS, automatic transmission, dual front air conditioning zones, dual rear air conditioning zones, automatic climate control rear air conditioning, leather steering wheel trim, power adjustable pedals, front console with storage, cruise control, power steering, steering wheel mounted audio controls, tilt-only steering wheel, universal garage door opener, 4-Wheel ABS, stability control, electronic suspension control, trailer hitch, trailer wiring, etc… Has been garage kept. The paint is in great shape with no scratches or dings anywhere. This Yukon is in great shape and everything works like it is supposed to. Its a beautiful car with nice leather, carpet, and even comes with an Owner’s Manual on CD and two sets of keys and remote controls. No door dings. In fact, I can’t find a dent in it. The price was reduced at $2,500 because I’m in a hurry to find a buyer. I need to sell it before November 11th, when I will be leaving on military duty with my platoon back to Afghanistan for a year and do not want to store my SUV. Hate to sell it but its not worth keeping insurance and paying storage fees for a year. So if you are interested please email me.

    Hi again,

I will do my best to walk you through the process. Right now I’m in a Maxwell military base. We are training, getting ready for leaving the country. The Yukon is already at our Military Logistic Department, ready to be delivered to its future new owner. The deal is handled by eBay so I don’t have much to do about it. Using eBay`s Buyer Protection Program, you get free shipping, at your place in 2-3 days. In addition, you get 7 days to try it out before buying it, and if you don’t like it, you can send it back on my expense. For more info on how it works, I can ask eBay to send you an email with more details on how to buy it. They will contact you shortly, as soon as have your personal details. If you would like to receive the email from eBay Motors with all the transaction information, please reply with your whole name, address and phone # and they will contact you right away.

    Stay safe,
    Cpt. George

So the truck is in Alabama…I thought the listing said Los Angeles….can you send me a lint to the Ebay program…never heard of it and it’s sounding kind of fishy…no offense intended…

    “Scammer”

I have removed the listing from ebay because I thought that I have found a buyer but in the end he never got the loan. If you wish to purchase please reply with your full name, address and phone #. I will forward your info to ebay and they will contact you shortly with more details about payment and shipping process. Also I will pay for delivery so don’t worry about that.

I don’t have it. I want to know if you are really interested or you’re just kidding me. If you are not interested please don’t waste my time.

    “Me”

I’m really very interested, in the vehicle…however, there is nothing to suggest this is a credible deal…I’m on hold with Ebay now to determine if what you are saying is true, to see if Ebay provides such a service for military members…the ad I responded to had a place for my phone number which I included, I find it odd that you have my email….but not my phone…

    “Scammer”

Not anymore available! Thanks because you have disgusted me!

    “Me”

That’s fine…because I’m speaking with Ebay now and they have no such program….in fact her exact words were “scam”

    -Automatic (shifts smoothly)
    -Clean title
The car has been extremely well maintained with a full service history and has not been involved in any accidents. Only 81,714 miles.
I bought it when i was serving in Minot Air Force Base North Dakota but i was transferred to Hickam AFB, Hawaii for a 3 years period. I priced the Dodge for a fast sale because i have an unpaid mortgage and I risk to loose my house from Bismarck, also I do not want to let it ruin in the parking lot for the next 3 years.
The car is already at our Military Logistic Department from Bismarck, ND U.S. Army crated and ready to go. The shipping will be free for you because i will transport it using the Internal Logistic Department! The Logistic Department will deliver the truck to the nearest U.S. Army base from your area and from there i will use a tow-truck to have it delivered at your door. The whole shipping process will take 2-3 days.
The financial part will be managed by eBay Motors which means that you will have a 7 days inspection period before committing to buy the truck. In this way both buyer and seller are 100% covered during the steps of this transaction.
The final price is $3.500 which include delivery at your home address. If you decide to buy my car email me your: Full Name ,Shipping address ,Phone Number so I can inform eBay Motors that I have a buyer! The scam continues, now as Lora Jackson…

    Hello,

This 2005 Toyota Tacoma Access Cab runs and drives excellent. It is in immaculate condition, meticulously maintained and hasn’t been involved in any accident. Everything works on the truck. It has no leaks or drips and does not smoke at all, slightly used in 100% working and looking conditions with a clear title.

I was serving in Fort Lewis, US Army base near Pierce County, Washington and now I am deployed in Powidz, Poland. The truck is still in Fort Lewis, US Army base and will be delivered from there.
I have dropped my price to $4,950 (purchase price) that includes delivery and handling to your address since this is an Urgent Sale!

If you’re interested to conclude this purchase in a timely manner email me your Full Name and Shipping Address to open a case with Amazon Payments. They will contact you to explain the entire procedure without any obligation to buy it or fees.

The financial part will be managed by them, which means that you will have a 5 days inspection period before committing to buy the truck. In this way both, buyer and seller are 100% covered during the steps of this transaction. If the truck is not in same condition as I said, you will ship it back on my expense and Amazon Payments will send you a full refund. But I assure you won’t be the case.

I don’t want to offend you, but the truck is priced for a fast sale so if you intend to apply for a loan or financing please do not reply to this message.

Hope to hear from you soon!

I’m selling it because I’m serving in Offutt AFB, Nebraska but I was promoted and transferred to Elmendorf AFB in Anchorage Alaska for a 3 years period, so I don’t need it anymore at this time. Let me give you a few details about it: very good shape, no mechanical issues,no scratches nor dents and it has never been involved in any kind of accidents. Has only 65,500 miles, its automatic, with an 1.8L V4 cyl. engine, front wheel drive, gray exterior and gray interior. Not interested in a trade and my final price is $3,000. I have a clear title, free of any liens or loans on it, under my name. Also, I’ve attached you some more pictures with the car in this email.
If you are interested in buying it or if you have any questions, please reply to this email.

    Hi Michael,
The car is located in Omaha, Nebraska, but i advertised it on other states also to get more exposure and sell it faster and as I told you in my first email, I recently got promoted and transferred to Elmendorf AFB in Anchorage Alaska for 3 years. The car is already at the shipping company , ready to be delivered to its future new owner. The deal is handled by eBay so I don’t have much to do about it. Using eBay`s Buyer Protection Program, you get free delivery, at your place in 3 days. In addition, you get 5 days to try it out before buying it, and if you don’t like it, you can send it back at my expense. If you wish to proceed just send me an email with your full name (for the bill of sale), a delivery address and a phone # where you can be reached and I will forward them to eBay and they will send you the invoice with all of the transaction details.

Thank you for all the post above, you all helped in preventing a scam. Just sent me an email yesterday see below, can’t believe this guy still at it since your post in 2008. Thanks to people like you, I didn’t loose my money!

Julie Matthews Today at 3:22 AM

    Hello,

First of all I want to thank you for your interest in my 2008 Honda Accord EX-L 3.5L. The car has been extremely well maintained with a full service history, it only has 55,151 miles! Transmission is automatic. The vehicle has all of its original floor mats, all books, complete set of tools and keys. Everything works in the car lights, gauges, radio, windows, locks, a/c blows ice cold, etc. It has no leaks or drips and does not smoke at all, slightly used in 100% working and looking conditions with a clear title free of liens. It has new Michelin tires.

I bought it when I was serving in U.S. Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, Denver,CO and now I am deployed in Denver,CO. The car will be delivered from here, it is stored in a military compound.

I have dropped my price to $3,000 (purchase price) including delivery and handling to your address, since this is an urgent sale, it will be delivered free of charge through a military transportation service to a designated location of your choice, average delivery time is 2-3 business days, depending on destination. It has been reduced because I need to find a buyer before my upcoming deployment take place and I don’t want to waste more time negotiating.

If you’re interested to conclude this purchase in a timely manner please email me your: full name, shipping address and phone number, to open a case with eBay Motors. They will contact you to explain the entire procedure. The financial part will be managed by them, which means that you will have a 5 days inspection period before committing to buy the car. Using eBay Motors service we are both 100% covered during the steps of this transaction.

I was On craigslist Feb 5th 2015 and seen a post for a 2007 infiniti g35 for the price of $2500. To good to be true right? So i email [email protected] to let her know i am intrested in the car and asked if there was any mechanical work that needs to be done being that the price is so low? She emailed me back a long msg stating the car was in good condition and only had 71,000 miles and was in Fort Lewis Wa. And wanted to use ebay motors as a third party. I agreed and stated i look forward to getting the invoice. So before making payment, i looked up Meagan Janet Sgt. Usaf and came across this link and read the stories. I seen that most replies are word for word. And are exactly the same replies im getting from Meagan Janet Sgt. Then i looked up her email address [email protected] and came across different ads for selling used cars for low prices most $2500 with the same email. So thanks to this link, i know this deal was to good to be true!! It was a SCAM!!

Scam running strong, two different Maximas, Grandson texted one and I the other. First of all was the phone number listed for both, in a Buffalo, NY ad with a Virginia number. Here is mine.
Right now I’m in a military base. We are training, getting ready for leaving the country. The delivery process will be managed by me. I think I can have it there at your home address within 2-3 working days. It will come with a clear title and reg. I am a member of the eBay buyer protection program and using this service you will get a 7 days testing period after delivery. During that 7 days testing period I will not be getting any money. I need to know if you are interested so I can ask eBay to send you the details on this deal. If interested please include in your next email your contact info for eBay (full name, shipping address and phone number), so we can get the ball rolling.

    Thank you

Where is car located and yes if it is nearby i would like to look at it. It’s for my Grandson. Sorry i did not answer last night. i turn my cell off at night.

The engine 3.5L, V6 GAS DOHC Naturally Aspirated runs very good and the automatic transmission shifts perfectly. Has a clean and clear US title in my name and there are no liens or loans on it. This vehicle was used by my husband who died 4 month ago. The price was reduced at $4000 because I’m in a hurry to find a buyer. I need to sell the vehicle before the 15 of the next month, when I will be leaving on military duty with my medical team out of the country for a year and do not want to store my vehicle. Hate to sell it but its not worth keeping insurance and paying storage fees for a year. Also, the vehicle is too big for my daughter so there’s no use on keeping it.If you interested i can send you more pics.

Not only does she involve a dead husband she uses the military as her base. I finally wrote her back and told her I was filing a complaint and that using the military was a disgusting form of fraud. I had friends and family in the military and do know sometimes they will sell their cars cheaper than they would like before deployment. But not at half the price and not in a different state. Wish we could round up these jerks and send them to a real boot camp for twelve months of intense labor.

I have all the papers and document and I am also the first owner. The price is $9,500 including the shipping to your address. Currently I am located in Omaha,NE because I just finished the divorce with my husband and i have moved here to my parents home. For the payment we will use ebay protection program for our safety and for payment i prefer to use a eBay Safety Bank Account.

I’m sure it will come to no surprise to most that the scam is not limited to just cars. I was searching for competitively priced RV’s when I stumbled across a ridiculously low-priced late model. When I emailed the seller, she responded with a request for my FULL NAME, SHIPPING ADDRESS AND PHONE NUMBER, and virtually the entire rest of the email was identical to yours. After pressing her during several emails for proof of ownership, she has since ceased correspondence. (Big surprise)

This is a numbers scam, plain and simple. Get massive amounts of people to respond to competitively priced items, no matter the item, the more responses the better. The concept is just an evolved form of telemarketing; for every 100,000 “No’s” you get, you’re bound to find some person with a lapse in judgment that says “Yes.” Law of Averages, plain and simple.

    A couple lessons to be learned here;
-The afore-mentioned “If it looks too good to be true, etc.”
-The scammers are using language extremely similar to proven web concepts, namely the Ebay money-back guarantee to legitimize their scams, so TAKE YOUR TIME and be careful reading claims to legitimacy in ANY website or sales medium.
-My Daddy always told me “Life’s rough on the stupid,” sounds crass but we all need to remind ourselves to be smart on the interwebs and otherwise.

Good job on all of the people ^above^ who noticed and called out these scams, and hopefully this helps others avoid their little traps and schemes.

Thank you for your interest, my 2004 Nissan Maxima SE is still available for sale.

There are no flaws or dents or any kind of damage. Never been in an accident. Mileage: 45,000. Vin number: 1N4BA41E74C923299 . This vehicle engine runs very, very smooth. Options: well, every single option available on this model. I have the clean title in hand.

My name is Simone Newman,I am a Staff Sgt. stationed at Aitos Logistic Center, Bulgaria. One months ago, my wife moved here with me and brought the car with her, but now we have to sell it back in the United States because we can’t register it here; it has US specs and everything, and registering it here in Europe will take forever. One advantage is that, as a POV (privately owned vehicle) of a military employee, the car can be shipped to anywhere in US for free It will arrive at your address in max 4 business days.

To make this as safe as possible, I only want to do this through eBay’s Buyer Protection Program, the most reputable escrow service online. This way, you won’t have to pay any money to me until the car is already registered under your name. Ebay will hold the payment until you receive and inspect the car. After you receive the car you will have 10 days (from the moment you receive it) to test, verify and do whatever you need to the car. They will secure the transaction making it safe for both of us.

The price is $1,800. There are no more taxes, fees or anything, that’s all you have to pay. Please get back to me asap if you decide to buy, and include in your e-mail your full name and address where you want it shipped so I can start the transaction with eBay. You will receive all the transaction, payment and shipping details from them once I start the transaction.

    Sincerely,
    SSgt Simone Newman

I really wish I had seen this post. I was in the market to buy my first car. Found an ad on WONDERFUL craigslist for a 2003 Mitsubishi Galant, the asking price was $2000. A lady in the military being shipped over seas and didn’t want the car just sitting in her yard. After I sent the $2000, I was asked to send an additional $1500 (which I didn’t). They told me that Google’s insurance wouldn’t ship the car because it was sold under value. My boyfriend was in contact with the seller, she said she also had to send $1500. Something just didn’t sit right with me so I googled the sellers name and her obituary popped up. Many people in the US share the same name.

I’m trying to get my money back. I have all the emails, printed the website, I have my receipt from where I sent the money. I called the bank and they told me to contact my local police department. I can say this is a lesson learned and I know why I don’t trust humans.

    Hello,

First of all I want to thank you for your interest in my 2004 Toyota Corolla CE. The car has been extremely well maintained with a full service history, it only has 71,673 miles. The transmission is automatic.

I bought it when I was serving in the U.S. Air Force in St. Clair, IL and now I am deployed in Terceira Island, Portugal. The car will be delivered from St. Clair, IL, it is stored in a military compound.

I have dropped my price to $1,500 (purchase price) including delivery and handling to your address, it will be delivered free of charge through a military transportation service to a designated location of your choice, average delivery time is 2-3 business days. All documents you need for ownership, manuals and bill of sale will be provided along with the vehicle. It has been reduced because I need to find a buyer before my upcoming deployment take place and I don’t want to waste more time negotiating.

If you’re interested to conclude this purchase in a timely manner please email me your full name, shipping address and phone number, to open a case with Military Smart Program. They will contact you to explain the entire procedure. The financial part will be managed by them, which means that you will have a 15 days inspection period before committing to buy the car. Thank you to all of you! I have been looking for a small rv trailer and since I like others mentioned have sent so many emails out inquiring about pricing, and details I was not able to find “Michael Parker” in my sent messages so I googled him and FOUND THIS WEBSITE.

Maybe I should stick to the dealers?

    Thanks again to all.

    I just got this one:

    Hello,

My name is Michelle ,thank you for contacting me about my 2005 Honda Accord EX-L. The general condition of the car is excellent, very well maintained, no damages, no mechanical problems and no electrical issues. It has a clear title free of any liens or loans and free of accidents. Here you have some details about it: Mileage: 97,000, Exterior Color: Gray, Interior Color: Gray, Transmission: Automatic,Fuel Type: Gasoline, Engine: 2.4 L4 , Drive train: Front Wheel Drive. The title is legally under my name.
I am selling it for $1,800 because my husband died 1 month ago (he had a heart attack) and brings me bad memories. Along with my daughter we decided to sell the house and moved to my brother in California, trying to start a new life.
I want to sell it as soon as possible at this price. If you have any other questions, or need more info and pictures, you are free to ask.

    Thank you,
    Michelle Martin.

NICE TRY……I think I might just have some fun with this one.

My parents were just screwed by this scam. Very sad. Watch out for the following contact information.

    The message is below:

    Hello,

The title and all the paperwork will come along with the Motor home, the Motor home is in perfect working condition, oil was changed last month and no scratches or dents. Below are the camper photos and after talking with eBay, it sounds like the transaction works like this: You need to send me your FULL NAME, shipping ADDRESS and phone number. I will forward them to eBay so we can initiate our transaction with them. Once the transaction has started, we will both receive further instructions about it including a payment invoice and bill of sale. You will need to make the payment to eBay as eBay will give me the shipping instructions to start the shipping. I will ship the vehicle to your address and after you receive it, you’ll have 5 days to inspect it; drive it and check its’ documents before actually deciding to keep it. During this whole time eBay will hold your money in their trust account. If you’re satisfied with the vehicle and decide to keep it, you will need to inform eBay about this, and eBay will release the entire amount of money to me.

If the vehicle is not as I described it and you decide not to keep it, then eBay will refund your deposit in full, no questions asked and shipping back the vehicle will be my concern.

Please take into consideration and remember that I will get paid only AFTER you receive the vehicle and confirm that you indeed want to keep the vehicle after the inspection period. We are both covered. Sorry for the long email as I have tried to explain the entire process.

    Thanks,

    Lt. Ashley Dawson

Almost the same as what Josh has above except the email was [email protected]. She called herself Sgt. Sarah Thompson. Stated she was being deployed to Afghanistan and don’t want my truck to be stored in a garage while I’m gone. It was a 2001 A Dodge Ram 1500 for $1500.00 same wording as Josh. We fell for it and lost $1500.00. We are 75 years old and it really hurt to loose that much money.
