“There’s always a temptation, in the middle of a long struggle, to seek the quiet life, to escape the duties and problems of the world, and to hope the enemy grows weary of fanaticism and tired of murder. This would be a pleasant world, but it’s not the world we live in. The enemy is never tired, never sated, never content with yesterday’s brutality. This enemy considers every retreat of the civilized world as an invitation to greater violence. In Iraq, there is no peace without victory. We will keep our nerve and we will win that victory.”

This excerpt from President George W. Bush’s speech sounds more like the Christian life than the war on terrorism.

We too grow weary of our struggle to live the Christian life. We want to give up and seek a quiet, easy life – Why can’t I just do whatever I feel like doing, spend my time and money in whatever way I want? Why do I have to care about my neighbor? Why can’t I overindulge once in a while? Why do I always have to be the controversial voice in speaking up against wrong? What is so wrong about wanting things for myself?

Giving up the fight is exactly what the enemy, Satan, wants us to do. He is never tired. If we give up, he is assured of victory.

So let’s keep our nerve, keep our focus on our Leader, and He will lead us to victory.
